Part of the mental floor plan that I did have in mind: Foyle's bedroom is converted from a literal closet. I designed it so the clothes and such belong in there and a bed was just sort of shoved in underneath everything.

I wasn't trying to be cute or clever with symbolism about my protagonist living in the closet (although in hindsight: hilarious) so much as I wanted a living arrangement that was a really eccentric and efficient use of a tiny space.

Other purposeful inclusion here: the window above the bed. A lot of old walk in closets have windows because they didn't have electricity when they were designed and the window provided light. Window wells are also common features of Victorian apartments as a way to bring in light and air in a narrow/deep floor plan.
